Hilarity, found in high school essays

Every year, English teachers from across the country can submit their collections of actual similes and metaphors found in high school essays. These excerpts are published each year to the amusement of teachers across the country. Here are last year's winners:

1. Her face was a perfect oval, like a circle that had its two sides gently compressed by a thigh Master.

2. His thoughts tumbled in his head, making and breaking alliances like underpants in a dryer without Cling Free.

3. He spoke with the wisdom that can only come from experience, like a guy who went blind because he looked at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it and now goes around the country speaking at high schools about the dangers of looking at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it.

4. She grew on him like she was a colony of E.Coli, and he was room-temperature Canadian beef.

5. She had a deep, throaty, genuine laugh, like that sound a dog makes just before it throws up.

6. Her vocabulary was as bad as, like, whatever.

7. He was as tall as a six-foot, three-inch tree.

8. The revelation that his marriage of 30 years had disintegrated because of his wife's infidelity came as a rude shock, like a surcharge at a formerly surcharge-free ATM machine.

9. The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn't.

10. McBride fell 12 stories, hitting the pavement like a Hefty bag filled with vegetable soup.

11. From the attic came an unearthly howl. The whole scene had an eerie, surreal quality, like when you're on vacation in another city and Jeopardy comes on at 7:00 p.m. instead of 7:30.

12. Her hair glistened in the rain like a nose hair after a sneeze.

13. The hailstones leaped from the pavement, just like maggots when you fry them in hot grease.

14. Long separated by cruel fate, the star-crossed lovers raced across the grassy field toward each other like two freight trains, one having left Cleveland at 6:36 p.m. traveling at 55 mph, the other from Topeka at 4:19 p.m. at a speed of 35 mph.

15. They lived in a typical suburban neighborhood with picket fences that resembled Nancy Kerrigan's teeth.

16. John and Mary had never met. They were like two hummingbirds who had also never met.

17. He fell for her like his heart was a mob informant, and
she was the East River.

18. Even in his last years, Granddad had a mind like a
steel trap, only one that had been left out so long, it had
rusted shut.

19. Shots rang out, as shots are known to do.

20. The plan was simple, like my brother-in-law Phil. But unlike Phil, this plan just might work.

21. The young fighter had a hungry look, the kind you get from not eating for a while.

22. He was as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical lame duck, either, but a real duck that was actually lame, maybe from stepping on a land mine or something.

23. The ballerina rose gracefully en Pointe and extended one slender leg behind her, like a dog at a fire hydrant.

24. It was an American tradition, like fathers chasing kids around with power tools.

25. He was deeply in love. When she spoke, he thought he heard bells, as if she were a garbage truck backing up

Obscure laws that will make you go hmmm!?

-- In Bakersfield, California, anyone having intercourse with Satan must use a condom. (An asbestos one we presume.)

-- In Oblong, Illinois, it's punishable by law to make love while hunting or fishing on your wedding day.

-- In Minnesota, it is illegal for any man to have sexual intercourse with a live fish. (Apparently it's OK for woman.)

-- No man is allowed to make love to his wife with the smell of garlic, onions, or sardines on his breath in Alexandria, Minnesota. If his wife so requests, law mandates that he must brush his teeth.

-- Warn your hubby that after lovemaking in Ames, Iowa, he isn't allowed to take more than three gulps of beer while lying in bed with you -- or holding you in his arms.

-- Bozeman, Montana, has a law that bans all sexual activity between members of the opposite sex in the front yard of a home after sundown -- if they're nude.

-- In hotels in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, every room is required to have twin beds. And the beds must always be a minimum of two feet apart when a couple rents a room for only one night. And it's illegal to make love on the floor between the beds!

-- The owner of every hotel in Hastings, Nebraska, is required to provide each guest with a clean and pressed nightshirt. No couple, even if they are married, may sleep together in the nude. Nor may they have sex unless they are wearing one of these clean, white cotton nightshirts.

-- An ordinance in Newcastle, Wyoming, specifically bans couples from having sex while standing inside a store's walk-in meat freezer!

-- A state law in Illinois mandates that all bachelors should be called master, not mister, when addressed by their female counterparts.

-- In Romboch, Virginia, it is illegal to engage in sexual activity with the lights on.

-- In Merryville, Missouri, women are prohibited from wearing corsets because "the privilege of admiring the curvaceous, unencumbered body of a young woman should not be denied to the normal, red-blooded American male."

-- It's safe to make love while parked in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Police officers aren't allowed to walk up and knock on the window. Any suspicious officer who thinks that sex is taking place must drive up from behind, honk his horn three times and wait approximately two minutes before getting out of his car to investigate.

-- A law in Helena, Montana, mandates that a woman can't dance on a table in a saloon or bar unless she has on at least three pounds, two ounces of clothing. (Ouch! These pasties hurt!)

-- Anywhere in the U.S., it's illegal to use any live endangered species, excepting insects, in public or private sexual displays, shows or exhibits depicting cross-species sex. (Insectophiles apparently were successful in their lobbying efforts.)

-- Lovers in Liberty Corner, New Jersey, should avoid satisfying their lustful urges in a parked car. If the horn accidentally sounds while they are frolicking behind the wheel, the couple can face a jail term.

-- In Carlsbad, New Mexico, it's legal for couples to have sex in a parked vehicle during their lunch break from work, as long as the car or van has drawn curtains to stop strangers from peeking in.

-- Women aren't allowed to wear patent-leather shoes in Cleveland, Ohio - a man might see the reflection of something "he oughtn't!"

-- No woman may have sex with a man while riding in an ambulance within the boundaries of Tremonton, Utah. If caught, the woman can be charged with a sexual misdemeanor and "her name is to be published in the local newspaper." The man isn't charged nor is his name revealed.

-- It is illegal for any member of the Nevada Legislature to conduct official business wearing a penis costume while the legislature is in session.

Flash Fiction Friday

The Game
by Jude Mason

Breathless from his frantic flight, Kyle peered around the base of a giant Cedar, searching for his pursuer. Seeing nothing, he dropped his hand to his naked crotch. Excitement stirred his loins and he thought of the possible prize.

The net whispered as it fell, trapped him, entwining as a lover's embrace. Too late, he lunged ahead, crying, "No! I'm so close!"

The huntress leered down at her catch. Exhilarated by her success, heart racing, her pussy clenched. "Close, but not close enough," she teased. "Kneel; I take you as my prize."

Secretly elated, he complied, erection burgeoning.

According to UNAIDS estimates, there are now 33.4 million people living with HIV, including 2.1 million children. During 2008 some 2.7 million people became newly infected with the virus and an estimated 2 million people died from AIDS.1 Around half of all people who become infected with HIV do so before they are 25 and are killed by AIDS before they are 35.2

The vast majority of people with HIV and AIDS live in lower- and middle-income countries. But HIV today is a threat to men, women and children on all continents around the world.

It's Tuesday and I'm not on OGG

It's Tuesday and my first week away from the Oh Get a Grip blog. It was a really great blog, still is for that matter, but I made the decision to resign my spot, which was the Tuesday spot. You know, it's always difficult to know what works in the way of promotions and what is a waste of time. Blogs seem to get noticed by Google, but does that really mean anything? They say Facebook is a good tool, but if you're not good at chatting it's very difficult to know what to do with it. The same goes for Twitter, possibly times ten.

So, here I am, it's Tuesday and I'm wondering about the topic on OGG. Don't be scared, it's just a genre, meaning, write something in the genre you've never tried and are terrified to do so. WTH! LOL

My first thought was historical, but I've actually done a couple of them. One, Of Death and Desire, has just been released and in my opinion is a super story. The cover is gorgeous on this book, Michelle Lee did an awesome job.

It's not simply a historical though, I guess I don't do single genre. This one is also m/m and paranormal. Yup, it's got a ghost. A very sexy and sad one, but it gets sorted out in the end. You'll see when you go buy the book.

Man was that an in your face, blatant promo. Ugh.

So, back to what I'd write if I had to. Well, there's chick lit. I'm not actually real sure what that is, so any pointers would be nice. When I do think of chick lit, I think of fluffy romance, and if I'm wrong please don't shoot me. I just write this stuff, labels are difficult. It wasn't all that long ago I couldn't believe it was up to me to figure out titles for the things I wrote.

Oh, speaking of wrote. I just put the finishing touches on a new story and sent it off to one of my newer publishers, Noble Romance. Rescue Me is going to hopefully be accepted into a science fiction anthology. Noble is a fairly new publishing company, but Jill, the owner, seems to be on the right track. She listens to her authors and works hard at keeping the standards up there. We'll see how it goes.

I've also just been told my newest with Total E-Bound, Stiff Trick has finished the editing process. This is the last one I work with Janice, one of the best editors I've had the pleasure of working with. She's got to take a hiatus for at least six months, so I do hope she'll be able to come back sometime next year.

Well, I guess for not knowing what I was going to write about, I managed to fill a page. What's on your plate right now, and are you looking forward to the holidays?

Hugs

Dear diary, that's how you're supposed to begin these things, or so I assume. I never in a million years thought I'd write in one, let alone under these circumstances. This was Jonathan's doing. When he asked me to make this entry, it was something I had to do, for him. He's given up so much.

The beginning. Yes, that's where I should begin and then let his accounting tell the tale.

EXCERPT

Soft wetness surrounded his cock. A gentle tugging, sucking, encouraged an erection. His balls churned. His hips rose, buttocks clenching to extract the last ounce of pleasure from…

The head of his cock brushed the back of a throat. He knew it was a throat—Philip’s.
He twisted to his side. The mouth followed; the sucking increased. He groaned. His hips pulled back, then thrust forward. The sensation was exquisite. Hot, tight, and the air brushing his belly was the sweetest tickle. His heart drummed wildly, threatening to burst from the emaciated confines of his chest. He slipped his hand down and paused, afraid.

He balled his hands into fists; one at his side with the sheet gripped tight, the other empty, aching, on his belly. His hips found a rhythm, a gentle thrusting that had him breathless with desire. Teeth scraped along his shaft, Philip’s signature sucking technique. Lips pressed to the base of his cock; again he was sure they were his lover’s. His climax neared, balls churned and crept in close to his body.

“Please!” He woke with a start. His heart raced. Sweat trickled from under his arms and formed a pool of coolness beneath him. Automatically, he rolled onto his back, right hand going to his groin, to his cock. Aching, rampantly erect and throbbing, he was a heartbeat away from spewing. “Philip,” he groaned, bewildered, filled with lust.

Thrusting the bedclothes aside, he stroked himself. The hard length slid through his fingers easily, pre-cum slick. A stroke, and his body tensed, another and his balls boiled. Too long without release, too long alone, he shuddered and sobbed as a stream of spunk arced toward the ceiling then splattered on his chest. Another followed a heartbeat later; his toes curled. He choked back a sob and thrust himself into his fist. The next few pulses coaxed only an oozing dribble of his essence from him and coated his fingers. He squirmed for a moment, enraptured in the much needed release.

But, then his dream came back to him. Philip’s mouth. Philip’s teeth and tongue. And then the memories of his death hit.

“No!” The single word tore from him, a vehement denial of his loss, his longing, and the heart-wrenching sorrow that just wouldn’t allow him any peace. But, even as he remembered the dream and thought of how much he’d loved Philip, the pain was just a little less.

What the pilgrims ate

Hey, I'm not a huge fan of historicals, mostly because I'm sure I'll mess up and stick something inappropriate in, either words or 'things'. I have done a couple and thought you might like to check out a really good site for what the pioneers who lived in the US and part of Canada might have been like.

Here's just a little of what I found there:

Ever wonder what foods the Vikings ate when they set off to explore the new world? How Thomas Jefferson made his ice cream? What the pioneers cooked along the Oregon Trail? Who invented the potato chip...and why?

Welcome to the Food Timeline! Food history presents a fascinating buffet of popular lore and contradictory facts. Some people will tell you it's impossible to express this topic in exact timeline format. They are correct. Most foods we eat are not invented; they evolve.

and much much more. Check it out here:

Check this out, I'm sure you'll get a giggle, unless you live in a certain southern state. And, for anyone who lives in this particular state, please, don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger and am simply passing along news.

His Lady Flame (wc 100)
© Jude Mason

An ear-shattering explosion, brilliant columns of flame rose furious into the night, snatching his breath. His heart thundered wildly.

"Mistress mine," he moaned, stroking his erection. The fire raged before him, his desire raged within. Tendrils of flame flicked towards him seductively and faintly, in the distance, sirens wailed.

In his dream, she beckoned him, the vision of her luscious curves billowing above the blackened building, coaxing him, commanding him. Heat from her enticed him closer. His orgasm erupted urgent – compliant.

Furtively, fuel can in hand, he fled. Anxiously, glancing back, desperate to know if he'd pleased his Lady Flame.

Johnny Depp, the sexiest man alive 2009!

No surprise here!

For just the third time ever, there is a two-time winner of People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” award.

On Wednesday, Johnny Depp joined Brad Pitt (1995 and 2000) and George Clooney (1997 and 2006) as the only two-time winners of the much-debated title. It seems usually, the sexiest man alive is coming off some big movie set. Depp, who won in 2003, won this year, despite his keeping a low profile in 2009.

The 'Kris...errr....Jenna was bored' meme

Apparently, Kris from Kris 'N' Good Books was bored, so she created a GLBT meme which Erotic Horizon somehow managed to suck Jenna into, who then tagged me. How the hell do these things happen and why do they flow over onto me?. LOL

Unfortunately, I spend every free minute writing and promoting, and don't have as much time to read as I wish I did. So some of these answers suck. (Okay, this last bit was Jenna's message but it fits perfectly for me, so I left it.)

Rules:

1. Answer all the questions below in either the comments here or post it on your own site. If you post it on your own site you have to come back and give the link here so I/Jenna can mosey on over and see if you answered correctly have a sticky beak.
2. You have to tag two other people once your done and pester them relentlessly until they do the meme too.

3. Instead of a meme image thing you have to post a cookie, preferably a twofer. It is an m/m meme after all. ;)

*rubs hands together in glee*

(Jenna's cookies courtesy of Kaenar Langford!)

Questions:

1. How long have you been reading GLBTQ fiction? 20 years at least.

2. What was the first book you read in this genre? Honestly, I can't remember.

3. Are you 'out' as a reader? No.

4. Ebooks, print or both? E-books mostly.

5. Do you buy direct from publishers or from secondary sellers? Authors make more when we buy from publishers, so publishers.

6. Prove you're a Book Slut. How many books would you say you buy a week? I don't buy enough to prove I'm a Book Slut, but I write gay erotica almost exclusively right now. Does that count ?

7. Are you a cover, blurb or excerpt buyer? Yes. The cover catches my interest, but if the blurb and/or isn't good, I'll walk away.

8. Yeah, you read reviews, but do you actually take notice of them? No. Having had such a wide variety of reviews myself, I've come to the conclusion that reviews are just the opinion of one more reader, and not always a reader who enjoys the genre they review.

9. Who's your fave publisher? I write for Total E-Bound, Noble Romance, Phaze, loveyoudivine and A Woman's Goodnight Audio. So, them guys.

10. What about authors? Your top two only!! Jenna Byrnes and Morgan Hawke.

11. Is there a sub-genre you particularly dis/like? I love science fiction/futuristic fantasy, dislike historical.

12. Short or long?? *rolls eyes* And, no, I'm not talking about cocks. You're not? How upsetting. LOL Both have their uses. *G*

13. Anything turn you off about m/m or is all just glorious smut to you? It's all good for me.

14. Finish this sentence. You know it's m/m twu wuv when...my eyes are glued to the page.

15. What trope or theme are you heartily sick of in m/m romance? Nope, there are only so many plots, but there are a million ways to tell the story.

16. If you could choose any 3 characters for a m/m/m who would they be? Any three would be fine.

17. What new GLBTQ release are you most hanging out for right now? Stallion's Pride by Jenna Byrnes and Jude Mason. (Works for me)

18. What GLBTQ book has completely blown you away this year? Stroke of Luck, which ain't out yet, but man are you all in for a nice read this coming February.

19. What do you think we'll see more of in m/m romance in 2010? Everything. M/M is on a roll.

20. Don't you agree that author Josh Lanyon should kill off arsehole character Jake Riordan? Sadly, I haven't read about Jake, but Josh is a cutie so whatever he thinks is fine.
